San Juan County Shoreline Master Program: Comprehensive Update

Public comment period is closed

The Washington Department of Ecology held a public comment period on San Juan County’s proposed comprehensive update to their Shoreline Master Program. The period for public comment was from July 22, 2016, to September 2, 2016.

Ecology used mail and email to notify those who had expressed prior interest. Ecology also issued a news release to encourage public participation and comment. Ecology has received over fifty comments. Comments cover a wide range of issues.

Response to public comment

Ecology is preparing a summary of public comments and will send this to the San Juan County. The county will write a response to the public’s comments. The response to comments will be posted here when available. Please check back.

Next steps: Ecology's decision

Ecology will decide if the San Juan County's proposed program to the requirements of the Shoreline Management Act and the Shoreline Master Program Guidelines. Ecology will decide whether to:

  • Approve the program as is or with recommended changes, or
  • Send the proposed program back to San Juan County's with required changes to meet statutory and rule requirements. Recommended changes may also be included with the required changes.
