Malden Shoreline Master Program: Comprehensive Update

Public Comment Requested - August 24, 2016 to September 26, 2016 at 5:00 p.m.

The Washington Department of Ecology seeks public comment on the Town of Malden’s proposed update to its Shoreline Master Program. The Town of Malden has shoreline along Pine Creek.

Whitman County, and its cities and towns with jurisdictional shorelines formed a coalition to pursue a regional update to their shoreline master programs. The cities and towns of Whitman County will each have an individual comment period for their Shoreline Master Program update.

The Town of Malden is updating their Shoreline Master Program (SMP) to reflect the local vision for appropriate shoreline development, public shoreline access, and environmental protection as required by the Shoreline Management Act (RCW 90.58). The comprehensive update revises the existing shoreline program, including the goals, policies, regulations, shoreline environment designations, and administrative procedures and definitions. This updated SMP increases protection and restoration of habitat and water quality, provides more certainty for development, and improves public access and recreational opportunities.

Ecology will compare the Malden proposed program to the requirements of the Shoreline Management Act and the Shoreline Master Program Guidelines. Based on the comparison, Ecology will decide whether to:

  • Approve the program as is or with recommended changes, or
  • Send the proposed program back to the town with required changes to meet statutory and rule requirements. Recommended changes may also be included with the required changes.
