Pierce County Shoreline Master Program: Comprehensive Update

Public comment period is closed

The Washington Department of Ecology held a public comment period on Pierce County’s proposed comprehensive update to their Shoreline Master Program. The period for public comment was from March 15 - April 29, 2016. An open house and public hearing were held at Pacific Lutheran University on March 30, 2016. Over 50 people attended the hearing and 26 individuals testified.

Ecology used email to notify those who had expressed prior interest. Ecology also issued a news release and legal ad to encourage public participation and comment. Ecology has received verbal and written comments from over 130 individuals/organizations. Comments are focused on aquaculture, proposed shoreline environment designations, water access facilities, public participation, tribal treaty rights and a variety of other topics.

Response to public comment

Ecology has prepared a summary of public comments and sent this to Pierce County on May 31, 2016. The county has responded to the public's comments and it is detailed in the Responsiveness Summary.

Next steps: Ecology's decision

Ecology will decide if the Pierce County's proposed program update meets the requirements of the Shoreline Management Act and the Shoreline Master Program Guidelines. Ecology will decide whether to:

  • Approve the program as is or with recommended changes, or
  • Send the proposed program back to Pierce County with required changes to meet statutory and rule requirements. Recommended changes may also be included with the required changes.
